State of Mexico launches bold cleanup to combat record waste crisis

The State of Mexico has launched a major cleanup campaign to tackle its waste problem. With nearly 17,000 tons of rubbish produced daily—the highest in the country—authorities are urging residents to take action. The initiative, called ‘Let’s Clean Up Our State of Mexico,’ has already made progress under Governor Delfina Gómez’s leadership. The campaign kicked off ahead of World Environment Day, with José Alberto Couttolenc Buentello—known as Pepe—leading calls for public involvement. As coordinator of Mexico’s Green Ecological Party (PVEM), he praised Gómez’s efforts in mobilising communities to protect the environment.

Over 743 tons of waste were collected across 30 municipalities during the drive. Couttolenc also recognised Environment Secretary Alhely Rubio Arronis for expanding the initiative’s reach. The push aims to address the state’s severe waste challenge through coordinated local action.

The cleanup removed hundreds of tons of rubbish in its first phase. Officials now hope the campaign will encourage long-term participation from residents. With the State of Mexico producing more waste than any other region, sustained efforts will be needed to maintain progress.
