Samyang Foods Launches Plant-Based Research Hub in the Netherlands

South Korean food giant Samyang Foods is setting up a new research hub in Wageningen, Netherlands. The facility will focus on plant-based and functional foods, tapping into the region's strong food tech expertise. The move aligns with the Dutch government's push for a more sustainable diet by 2030.

The Netherlands was selected for its leadership in food innovation and supportive policies. Wageningen, in particular, offers deep industrial and academic networks in agrifood technology. The hub will not operate as a local subsidiary but as an overseas research base for Samyang Foods.

The facility's main priority is developing plant proteins and healthier plant-based products. Activities will include tech scouting, joint research, material testing, and talent recruitment. It will also work alongside Samyang Foods Europe, the company's sales-focused subsidiary in Amsterdam. The Dutch government has set a target for half of all protein consumption to come from plant-based sources by 2030. Updated dietary guidelines now recommend cutting red meat while increasing legumes and nuts. Meanwhile, South Korea is also advancing its future food sector with a national action plan for plant-based alternatives.

The Wageningen hub will strengthen Samyang Foods' research into sustainable and functional foods. It builds on the region's reputation for agrifood innovation while supporting broader dietary shifts in Europe. The facility is expected to play a key role in the company's global R&D strategy.
