Russians flock to suburbs as housing priorities shift in 2024

A growing number of Russians are looking to change or upgrade their homes in the next three years. New research shows that 63% of the population are considering a move, with many prioritising suburban areas over city centres. Yet while dreams of rural living persist, practical concerns like infrastructure and digital access are shaping their decisions. Nearly two-thirds of those planning to relocate—67%—are eyeing homes outside the city. However, the reality leans toward suburban neighbourhoods rather than remote countryside. Around 40% favour these areas, while 32% consider standalone country homes and roughly 30% still prefer city centres.

Price remains the most critical factor, with 54% of respondents listing it as their top concern. But other issues also weigh heavily: 62% worry about dishonest developers, and transport links (51%) along with developed infrastructure (45%) are key considerations. Digital solutions are no longer optional—78% of potential movers see them as essential in their new housing.

Currently, resale apartments dominate the market, housing nearly 59% of those surveyed. While 25% of Russians already have firm relocation plans, another 37% are actively exploring their options. The trend points to a shift toward suburban living, though affordability and reliability remain major hurdles. With digital infrastructure and transport access playing a bigger role, the housing market is adapting to changing priorities. Over the next few years, these factors will likely influence where and how Russians choose to live.
