Russian Veterans Turn Entrepreneurs With State-Backed Business Grants

Veterans of the special operation in Komi are receiving support to launch their own businesses. A new social contract programme offers grants of 350,000 rubles to help them start or expand ventures. Valentin Dits, head of the regional branch of Defenders of the Fatherland, is overseeing the initiative to guide former service members into entrepreneurship. The programme has already made progress, with 12 business recommendations issued to veterans. Seven social contracts have been signed so far. Unlike before, the income threshold for accessing the grant has been removed, making it easier for more veterans to qualify.

One veteran in Pryluzhsky is running a business focused on firewood harvesting and repair services. Another, based in Syktyvdinsky, is developing beekeeping and preparing to open an apiary. Meanwhile, a veteran from Ust-Kulomsky is building boats and storage boxes for industrial hunters.

Other beneficiaries include a meat processing business owner, who plans to expand operations using the grant. A separate veteran will use the funds to purchase solvents for a newly established beauty school.

Before receiving support, each applicant undergoes an interview to assess their business plans, motivations, and sense of responsibility. This step ensures the funds are used effectively for sustainable ventures. The initiative provides both financial backing and expert guidance to veterans transitioning into entrepreneurship. With grants already allocated and businesses taking shape, the programme aims to create long-term opportunities for those who served. Further contracts are expected as more veterans apply for the scheme.
