Russian Man Loses Life Savings in $1.7M Crypto Scam Tragedy

A 46-year-old man from Yeysk District has lost his russia savings in a cryptocurrency scam. He transferred over 1.7 million rubles after seeing an online ad that promised high investment returns. This case highlights a wider issue, as russia saw around 40,000 people fall victim to crypto fraud in 2023.

The total losses reported last year reached roughly 15 billion rubles (about 150 million US dollars), according to the Central Bank of russia.

The incident began when the victim came across an advertisement offering quick and substantial profits. Believing the offer, he contacted a person claiming to be a company manager. Under their guidance, he took out two loans totalling over 1.7 million rubles and added more than 500,000 rubles from his savings account.

He then transferred the full amount to a cryptocurrency wallet as instructed. However, when he tried to withdraw the funds, he discovered it was impossible. Shortly after, the supposed manager vanished without leaving any trace.

This case is part of a growing trend in russia. In 2023 alone, the Central Bank recorded nearly 40,000 individuals affected by similar schemes. The total financial damage from such scams amounted to approximately 15 billion rubles, equivalent to around 150 million US dollars.

The victim now faces significant financial hardship after losing both his savings account and borrowed money. Authorities continue to warn the public about the risks of unregulated investment schemes. Reports of crypto-related fraud remain a serious concern across the country.
