Russia pushes BRICS grain exchange to reshape global food trade
Russia has proposed the creation of a BRICS grain exchange to strengthen food security across the bloc. The initiative, first introduced in March, was highlighted at the 14th meeting of BRICS agriculture ministers. Officials described the plan as a way to boost trade in national currencies among member states.
The idea of a BRICS grain exchange was put forward by Eduard Zernin in early March. By late May, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev called the proposal promising. President Vladimir Putin later expressed support for the initiative.
At the recent BRICS agriculture ministers' meeting, Russia's Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut announced that the Ministry of Agriculture is now developing concrete plans. The exchange would allow transactions in the national currencies of member countries, reducing reliance on foreign currencies. The bloc already plays a major role in global food production. BRICS nations hold around 30% of the world's arable land and produce roughly 40% of its grain. However, no public statements or confirmed steps from other BRICS members—Brazil, India, China, South Africa, or new entrants—have been recorded so far.
The proposed grain exchange remains in the planning stage, with Russia leading the effort. If implemented, it could reshape trade flows within the bloc and beyond. The next steps depend on how other BRICS nations respond to the initiative.
