Russia-China trade surges as VTB reports 36% payment spike in 2026

Russian and Chinese businesses are strengthening trade ties, with VTB reporting a sharp rise in transactions. The bank’s data shows a 36% increase in payments to China from its clients in early 2026. These figures were announced by Julia Kopytova, VTB’s Senior Vice President, at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2026. VTB’s database of Chinese suppliers has expanded rapidly this year. Now featuring over 2,500 company profiles, the platform has grown fivefold since January. It connects Russian and Chinese entrepreneurs, helping them find partners and close deals.

Small and medium-sized businesses using VTB’s services have also boosted their trade with China. Their contract portfolios with Chinese firms rose by 57% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year. The bank’s Shanghai branch plays a key role in supporting these transactions. Kopytova highlighted the growing demand for the database among companies from both countries. The tool aims to simplify partnerships by providing verified supplier information and streamlining business matchmaking.

The surge in trade activity reflects deeper economic cooperation between Russia and China. VTB’s expanded database and rising transaction volumes suggest stronger commercial links in 2026. Businesses on both sides are increasingly relying on such platforms to secure new contracts.
