Rootstock is expanding Bitcoin’s use beyond simple storage by turning idle holdings into productive assets. The platform has already deployed $20 million in tokenized private credit, with plans to reach $100 million by April. These moves aim to give Bitcoin holders access to Brazilian receivables and corporate debt without selling their coins. A major challenge for decentralised finance (DeFi) remains its struggle with clear, institutional-grade communication. Until protocols improve incident handling, large investors may keep shifting funds to centralised custody. Meanwhile, Rootstock is pushing ahead with solutions to unlock Bitcoin’s potential.
The platform’s first institutional product is a Bitcoin-collateralised loan for miners. This allows them to cover power bills without liquidating their Bitcoin reserves. In Japan, Rootstock has teamed up with Animoca Brands Japan to introduce corporate treasury tools and BTCFi (Bitcoin Finance) options. Surveys show 80% of Japanese investors plan to allocate funds to crypto within the year. Ecosystem builders like Midas and Hyperithm are constructing institutional-grade vaults on Rootstock. Custody services are provided by firms such as Fireblocks, Fordefi, and Utila. These developments come as around $260 billion in Bitcoin sits idle, often incurring custody fees of 10 to 50 basis points annually. Beyond loans, Rootstock supports tokenized real-world asset vaults and yield strategies. This lets Bitcoin holders earn returns without selling their assets. The platform also competes with traditional illiquid stores of value, like fine art and real estate, by making Bitcoin more composable and functional.
Rootstock’s push to diversify Bitcoin’s use cases includes tokenized credit, miner loans, and institutional vaults. With $20 million already deployed and a $100 million target by April, the platform is positioning itself as a key player in Bitcoin’s financial evolution. The shift could reduce reliance on centralised custody while offering new ways to generate yield from idle holdings.
