Rivian Lands $4.5B Loan to Build Georgia EV Factory and Robotaxis

Electric vehicle maker Rivian has secured a major loan to expand production in Georgia. The US Department of Energy will lend up to $4.5 billion to build a factory capable of producing 300,000 EVs each year. The project also includes plans for robotaxis and thousands of new jobs. The funding comes from a $6.5 billion conditional loan approved in 2024. Rivian will use the money to construct a Georgia facility for its lower-priced R2 model and up to 50,000 robotaxis in partnership with Uber. The company expects to create 7,500 permanent jobs, 2,000 construction roles, and 8,000 indirect positions.

Georgia’s Republican Governor Brian Kemp has backed EV-focused economic policies, helping the project move forward. Despite political shifts, the factory’s future appears secure, even beyond the 2026 gubernatorial election. This contrasts with former President Donald Trump’s efforts to slow vehicle electrification during his term.

The expansion aligns with growth in the domestic EV charging sector and robotaxi industry. Rivian’s Georgia plant will join its existing facility in Normal, Illinois, to meet demand for more affordable electric vehicles. The $4.5 billion loan will enable Rivian to scale up production and hire thousands in Georgia. The factory’s output of 300,000 EVs and 50,000 robotaxis per year will strengthen the company’s position in the electric vehicle market. Construction and job creation are set to begin in the coming months.
