PPL's earnings surge 7.1% as energy demand from data centers soars

PPL Corporation has announced robust financial growth along with increasing energy demand. The company's latest earnings report shows a 7.1% increase in ongoing earnings per share (EPS) for the current period. Simultaneously, it has boosted its quarterly dividend by nearly 5% and set ambitious targets for future expansion.

Over the past five years, demand for electricity and energy capacity in PPL's service areas has surged. Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and parts of the Midwest have witnessed sharp increases, driven by a boom in data centres. In 2024 alone, peak demand in Pennsylvania rose by over 10% annually, largely due to large-scale facilities operated by companies like Amazon and Microsoft. To meet this growth, PPL plans to invest $5 billion in infrastructure by 2028.

The company's latest financial results reflect this momentum. Ongoing EPS reached $1.81 per share, a 7.1% rise that aligns with earlier guidance. GAAP EPS also climbed to $1.59 per share, up from $1.20 in the previous year.

Looking ahead, PPL has set a 2026 ongoing EPS target of $1.90 to $1.98 per share, with a midpoint of $1.94—representing 7.2% growth. The firm has also extended its annual EPS compound annual growth rate (CAGR) target of 6%-8% through at least 2029. Shareholders will enjoy a higher quarterly cash dividend of $0.285 per share, or $1.14 annualised, marking a near 5% increase.

PPL's latest financial updates underscore steady earnings growth and a clear strategy for future investment. With rising energy demand from data centres and a commitment to expanding infrastructure, the company aims to maintain its upward trajectory. The dividend increase and extended EPS targets indicate confidence in long-term performance.
