Philippines and Japan strengthen agricultural ties to boost exports and food security
The Philippines is deepening its agricultural ties with Japan to boost exports and improve food security. Recent field trials in the Davao region have shown promising results from Japanese farming technologies, prompting plans for wider adoption across the country.
A Philippine delegation recently visited Japan to explore advanced agricultural practices. They toured facilities showcasing post-harvest technologies and grain management systems, which could help modernise the National Food Authority’s operations. Japan’s ability to store rice for up to five years—compared to the Philippines’ 30-day buffer—highlighted the potential benefits of better storage infrastructure.
Discussions between the two countries focused on expanding market access for Philippine farm and fisheries products. Efforts include improving logistics and adopting more Japanese agricultural technologies. The Philippines also aims to protect its banana exports to Japan by pushing for lower tariffs, possibly through joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. Horticulture is becoming a key export sector for the Philippines, driven by rising global demand for high-value products. Philippine pomelo is expected to enter the Japanese market by late 2026. To further promote local produce, the country will participate in a horticulture expo in Japan in 2027, showcasing fruits, flowers, and ornamental plants.
The partnership aims to strengthen the Philippines’ agricultural competitiveness and food security. Japanese technologies could soon be applied to more crops nationwide, while better trade terms may open new export opportunities. The collaboration also sets the stage for long-term improvements in storage, processing, and market access.
