Mexico City's $110M Floating Garden finally opens after years of debate

Mexico City has officially opened its new Floating Garden along the Tlalpan Causeway. The 1.8-kilometre-long project was unveiled last Sunday after years of planning and construction. Officials have defended its cost and timeline amid public scrutiny. The project carried a total price tag of 1.913 billion pesos, equivalent to around $110 million USD. Funding came from the city’s Infrastructure Maintenance and Expansion Fund (FIMAS), with the work awarded under a fixed-price contract. From the start, the budget remained unchanged, according to authorities.

Raúl Basulto Luviano, the city’s Public Works Secretary, dismissed claims of cost overruns. He stated that the final amount matched the original agreement of 1.914 billion pesos. A comparative study also confirmed that the project’s pricing aligned with similar infrastructure works in the capital.

The last remaining tasks are now being wrapped up. Officials expect all finishing touches to be completed within days, marking the project’s full completion. The Floating Garden stretches 1.8 kilometres along one of Mexico City’s key routes. Its completion adds a new green space to the urban landscape. With the final works nearly done, the project will soon operate as intended under its approved budget.
