Camera Maker Leica Gets New CEO - Leica names new CEO after record sales and premium camera growth
Leica has announced a change in leadership after eight years of growth under its current CEO. Andreas Voll will take over as chief executive in April, replacing Matthias Harsch, who helped drive record sales. The transition comes as the company strengthens its position in the premium camera market.
Matthias Harsch became CEO of Leica in 2017, guiding the Wetzlar-based firm to consecutive revenue records. Under his leadership, annual sales climbed to €596 million in the latest fiscal year. His tenure also saw the launch of the Leitz Phone, unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in late February 2025.
The new device boosted Leica's market share in high-end compact cameras. By December 2025, the company held 12% of the premium segment, selling around 250,000 units in its first ten months. Demand proved particularly strong in Asia and Europe, reflecting a broader revival of interest in compact, high-performance cameras.
Andreas Voll now steps into the role, bringing experience in premium technology and brand strategy. He will lead a company with roughly 2,300 employees worldwide, backed by majority owner Andreas Kaufmann, who holds a 55% stake. The remaining 45% belongs to private equity firm Blackstone.
Kaufmann, who chairs the supervisory board, praised Harsch's contributions while confirming the family's ongoing involvement in Leica and its subsidiaries. He emphasised their commitment to the company's long-term development.
The leadership change follows a period of expansion for Leica, marked by rising sales and a stronger foothold in premium cameras. With Voll's appointment, the company aims to build on its recent success while maintaining its focus on high-end technology and brand growth.
