Khan Academy's Bold Experiment Ends After Transforming 1,000 Careers in Tech

Ashley Ramrachia has closed Khan Academy, the tech talent initiative launched in 2020. The programme successfully moved over 1,000 people from non-tech roles into technology and data careers. Despite its shutdown, Ramrachia remains proud of what the project achieved in just three years.

Ramrachia founded Khan Academy after helping scale THG from 50 to 5,000 employees before its 2020 IPO. The initiative aimed to create opportunities for overlooked talent in warehouses, call centres, and care roles. Over 60% of those placed were women, and another 60% came from minority ethnic backgrounds.

Khan Academy secured £5 million in funding from LocalGlobe and partnered with major firms like HSBC, Ocado, and IAG. These collaborations proved its model could work across industries, not just within a single company. Ramrachia expressed gratitude to Saul Klein of LocalGlobe for his support and belief in the mission.

Despite two acquisition offers, Ramrachia declined both. The decision came from not wanting to stay involved in the business under new ownership. In March 2023, the programme officially ended. No public details exist about any follow-up initiatives Ramrachia may have started since then.

The mission to make potential count, however, is not over. Ramrachia has hinted at future plans to guide people toward new opportunities in tech and beyond.

Khan Academy's closure marks the end of a programme that reshaped careers for over 1,000 individuals. Its focus on diversity and scalable training left a clear impact on the tech sector. While no current projects have been announced, Ramrachia's commitment to talent development suggests further initiatives may emerge.
