Kazakhstan's electricity operator upgrades settlement system ahead of deadline

Kazakhstan’s national electricity operator, KOREM JSC, has completed a major upgrade to its settlement system well ahead of the deadline. The new software, now fully certified, replaces an uncertified version that raised concerns over reliability and security. Authorities had demanded improvements by March 2026, but the work finished early.

The previous system, used for managing the electricity balancing market, operated without proper certification. This left it exposed to technical failures, cybersecurity threats, and a lack of state oversight. Regulators warned that the uncertified software risked undermining trust in the market.

The Supreme Audit Chamber had set a strict deadline for KOREM JSC to fix the issues. By March 31, 2026, the operator was required to develop, test, and certify a new settlement centre system. Instead, the company delivered the fully compliant system ahead of time. The upgraded software now provides stronger controls and greater transparency. It reduces cybersecurity risks and improves the stability of the balancing market. State regulators can also monitor operations more effectively under the new framework.

KOREM JSC’s early completion of the settlement system ensures a more secure and reliable electricity market. The certified software meets regulatory demands and strengthens oversight. The changes are expected to prevent past vulnerabilities while maintaining stable market operations.
