Kazakhstan Emerges as Central Asia's AI Infrastructure Powerhouse

Kazakhstan is positioning itself as a growing hub for AI infrastructure in Central Asia. The country’s strong economic fundamentals, strategic location, and supportive policies are drawing attention from global tech firms. A shift in the AI industry—from model training to real-world deployment—is now reshaping demand for faster, more efficient computing solutions.

The transition is pushing companies to seek cost-effective data centre operations, and Kazakhstan’s low-energy costs offer a clear advantage. The global AI sector is moving beyond model development and focusing on practical applications. This change is increasing demand for high-performance computing that balances speed, power efficiency, and affordability. Metrics like processing speed per watt and per dollar are now key for businesses deploying AI systems.

Kazakhstan is responding by investing in data centres, digital infrastructure, and open AI platforms. The country’s low-cost energy resources make it an attractive location for large-scale computing operations. Jason Qu, president of semiconductor firm Turing Evolution, highlighted this advantage, noting that energy efficiency directly impacts cost competitiveness for AI workloads.

Turing Evolution, which collaborates with NVIDIA on AI solutions, is also developing its own GPUs to reduce expenses for data centres. Qu explained that customers prioritise speed, low latency, and affordability in AI inference and reasoning. The company views Kazakhstan as a strategic gateway to Central Asia and is exploring partnerships with local businesses and institutions.

Qu also predicted that while the region will initially rely on imported AI technologies, it will eventually build its own expertise. For Kazakhstan’s ambitions to succeed, however, a fully functional ecosystem will be needed to attract investment and drive innovation. Kazakhstan’s push into AI infrastructure aligns with broader industry trends favouring efficiency and real-world deployment. The country’s energy advantages and policy support could help it become a key regional player. Success will depend on building a strong tech ecosystem that fosters both local development and international collaboration.
