Kazakhstan and EBRD ink €12M deal to drive economic modernization by 2030

Kazakhstan and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have signed a new five-year cooperation agreement. The deal, running until 2030, aims to speed up the country’s economic modernisation and reinforce its position in Central Asia. Both sides will invest €6 million each in grants to back reforms and technical support. The agreement was finalised during the EBRD’s Annual Meeting in Riga, held from June 5 to 7, 2026. Government officials, financial leaders, and business representatives gathered to discuss future cooperation. Since starting operations in Kazakhstan, the EBRD has already poured around $12.8 billion into 354 projects across the country.

The new framework focuses on several key areas. A major priority is the green transformation of Kazakhstan’s economy, targeting decarbonisation, energy efficiency, and sustainable infrastructure. Plans also include boosting digitalisation, from artificial intelligence adoption to expanding digital networks and improving cybersecurity. Another central goal is developing the private sector, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The agreement seeks to strengthen Kazakhstan’s role as a regional trade and logistics hub through infrastructure upgrades and better cross-border connections. These efforts align with broader plans to integrate the country into global value chains. The partnership will support reform initiatives, sustainable growth, and deeper economic cooperation over the next five years.

The deal marks a significant step in Kazakhstan’s economic strategy. With €12 million in joint grants, the country and the EBRD will push forward reforms, digitalisation, and green projects. The agreement also sets the stage for stronger trade links and private sector growth in the region.
