Jerod Mayo trades NFL sideline for Wall Street in bold career pivot

Jerod Mayo has taken on a new role as managing director at Fifth Down Capital, a private equity firm. The move comes just months after his departure from the New England Patriots, where he spent one season as head coach. Mayo’s career has spanned playing, coaching, and business leadership.

Mayo first joined the Patriots in 2008 as a linebacker, playing until 2015. During his time on the field, he won a Super Bowl, earned two Pro Bowl selections, and received an All-Pro honour. After retiring, he transitioned into coaching, serving as New England’s linebackers coach from 2019 to 2023.

In 2024, Mayo was promoted to head coach but lasted only one season. The Patriots finished with a 4-13 record, and he was dismissed shortly after. Before his coaching stint, Mayo also worked outside football, holding the role of vice president of business development at Optum. Beyond sports, Mayo has been an active investor and advisor to private companies for over a decade. His latest position at Fifth Down Capital, which he joined in February 2025, focuses on partnering with high-potential companies and fund managers.

Mayo’s shift from football to finance marks a new chapter in his career. His experience in both sports and business positions him well for his role at Fifth Down Capital. The firm specialises in backing generational companies, aligning with Mayo’s long-term investment interests.
