James Murdoch's Lupa Systems nears deal to reclaim New York magazine

New York magazine could soon return to the Murdoch family after more than three decades. Lupa Systems, the investment firm led by James Murdoch, is in advanced talks to buy the publication from Vox Media. The deal would mark a significant shift for the magazine, which was last under Murdoch ownership in 1991. James Murdoch founded Lupa Systems in 2019 after leaving his role as CEO of 21st Century Fox. The firm has since built a portfolio in media and entertainment, including stakes in Tribeca Enterprises and the MCH Group, which operates Art Basel. If the acquisition proceeds, it would reunite New York magazine with the family that once helped shape its legacy.

Vox Media purchased New York magazine in 2019 for $105 million. Since then, the publication has thrived thanks to its digital brands, such as The Cut and Vulture. The potential deal also includes popular podcasts like *Pivot*, hosted by Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway. Rupert Murdoch originally acquired New York magazine in the 1970s, alongside the New York Post. That move played a key role in establishing his presence in the U.S. media landscape. The Wall Street Journal first reported the ongoing negotiations between Lupa Systems and Vox Media.

The acquisition would bring New York magazine back under Murdoch control for the first time since 1991. The magazine’s digital success and podcast assets add to its appeal. If finalised, the deal would further expand Lupa Systems’ media holdings.
