Intersport France takes over Southern Europe as Decathlon eyes rival bid
Intersport France has taken control of operations across Southern Europe, including Spain and Portugal. The move comes after Intersport Spain filed for creditor protection in March 2025, leaving its future uncertain. Now, a new subsidiary aims to revive growth in the region.
Meanwhile, Decathlon has entered the picture with a rival bid for Intersport Spain, currently under review by Spain's competition watchdog, the CNMC.
Intersport Spain struggled with rising debt, forcing it into creditor protection earlier this year. The financial strain led to the liquidation of its companies, leaving the fate of its 120 branches unclear.
In response, Intersport France stepped in to restructure operations. A newly formed subsidiary will oversee expansion in Spain and Portugal. Plans include modernising existing stores and improving their financial performance. The company also intends to open ten new locations in Spain. However, Decathlon has submitted a competing offer to acquire Intersport Spain. The bid is now being examined by the CNMC, which will decide whether the takeover can proceed.
The outcome of Decathlon's bid remains pending as regulators assess its impact. If approved, the acquisition could reshape Intersport's presence in Spain. For now, Intersport France continues its push to strengthen stores and expand in the region.
