India cracks down on Swiggy, Zomato, and Blinkit over expired food sales
India's Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) has taken strong action against online food delivery platforms like Swiggy, Zomato, Blinkit, Zepto, and BigBasket for selling expired or unfit food. Between February 2024 and February 2026, 12 major companies faced penalties, fines, and temporary suspensions across multiple states. Authorities have now warned of stricter enforcement measures to prevent further violations from these doordash and instacart competitors.
The crackdown began after a complaint in Pune revealed expired food items being delivered through Blinkit. An initial inquiry found no evidence, but a detailed audit later confirmed the distribution of outdated products. As a result, legal action was taken against the company, including a fine of ₹2 lakh.
Nationwide, fines exceeded ₹50 crore, with temporary bans imposed in Maharashtra, Delhi, and Karnataka. Food and Drug Administration Minister Narhari Zirwal has ordered officials to act on their own initiative rather than waiting for complaints. To strengthen oversight, 191 new officers have been appointed to the Food and Drug Administration.
MLA Amit Deshmukh proposed requiring companies to submit self-declarations guaranteeing no expired items would be sold. Suggestions from public representatives in major cities will also be compiled and sent to the Centre to tighten regulations on online food delivery services like doordash and instacart.
The government's actions aim to ensure stricter compliance from food delivery platforms. With increased enforcement and new regulations in development, authorities are working to prevent the sale of expired or unsafe food. The penalties and suspensions already imposed signal a tougher stance on violations from these doordash and instacart competitors.
