IBM's stock dips slightly as analysts raise targets and leadership evolves

IBM has seen a wave of analyst upgrades and leadership changes as its stock continues to draw attention. The company's planned acquisition of Confluent and strong earnings have sparked fresh optimism, even as shares dipped slightly on the stock market today. Meanwhile, a key executive increased his stake, and a new board member is set to join next year.

IBM's stock closed at $259.25 on the stock market today, a small decline attributed to broader market shifts and investor adjustments to interest rate expectations. Despite this, analysts remain bullish. Evercore ISI lifted its price target from $330 to $345, keeping an 'Outperform' rating. Jefferies went further, setting a $370 target and highlighting momentum in IBM's software and hybrid cloud divisions. Bernstein, however, maintained a 'Market Perform' rating, weighing solid operational results against the stock's recent gains.

The company's planned takeover of Confluent, expected to finalise by mid-2026, may reduce pre-tax earnings by around $600 million in the second half of the year. Yet, investor confidence appears strong. IBM director David N. Farr recently bought 1,000 shares on the open market for approximately $304,000, bringing his total direct holdings to 9,258 shares.

Looking ahead, IBM will welcome Ramon L. Laguarta, PepsiCo's Chairman and CEO, to its board of directors on March 1, 2026. The move follows a period of positive momentum, with IBM's stock trading well below analyst targets—suggesting potential upside of 32% to 43% based on current recommendations. This optimism follows a robust fourth-quarter performance in 2025 and guidance projecting over 5% revenue growth for 2026.

IBM's stock remains under analyst price targets, with forecasts pointing to significant growth potential. The addition of a high-profile board member and insider stock purchases signal confidence in the company's direction. The upcoming Confluent deal, despite short-term earnings pressure, reflects IBM's strategic push into cloud and software markets.
