Hospitality sector braces for job cuts as rising costs bite this summer
Industry data shows that nearly two thirds of hospitality businesses expect to cut staff in response to rising wage bills and higher business rates, a stark warning from a sector already operating on thin margins.

Trade bodies representing pubs, hotels and restaurants say the combination of policies landing today will impose billions of pounds in additional costs. They argue the burden is not merely cyclical, but the direct result of political choices that prioritise revenue over viability on the high street.
The increase in the minimum wage alone is expected to add around £1.4bn to the sector's costs, forcing employers to reassess staffing levels, opening hours and investment plans. At the same time, changes to business rates are pushing up property taxes, further squeezing operators who have yet to recover from recent economic shocks.
The consequences are already clear. Many firms say they will shorten trading hours, others are shelving expansion, and a significant minority warn they may close altogether. For a sector that provides a major source of entry level work, particularly for younger people, the implications are serious.
Business groups have criticised what they describe as a suffocating policy mix, arguing that Labour is effectively balancing the books on the backs of small and medium sized employers. Rather than encouraging growth, they say, the Government risks accelerating job losses and hollowing out town centres.
Ministers insist higher wages will support workers and boost demand, yet employers counter that rising labour costs without corresponding relief elsewhere simply force cuts. In practice, they argue, the policy transfers strain from households to businesses, without addressing the underlying weakness in the economy.
With energy costs also rising and confidence fragile, the hospitality sector now faces a difficult summer. Unless the Government shifts course, industry leaders warn that fewer jobs, less investment and more closures will follow, a predictable outcome of policies that appear detached from commercial reality.
