Hong Kong delegation secures 43 deals in Central Asia amid Middle Corridor trade push

A high-level delegation from Hong Kong recently visited Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to strengthen economic ties. Led by Chief Executive John Lee, the group secured 43 agreements with local businesses and organisations. The trip also highlighted growing interest in the Middle Corridor trade route. The delegation’s visit took place from June 1 to June 6, 2023. During the trip, two Hong Kong media organisations signed partnerships with a major Kazakh state-owned conglomerate. These deals aim to boost cooperation in journalism and information sharing.

On June 2, 2023, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway officially began full-scale operations. The 827-kilometre line links Central Asia with European markets via the South Caucasus. Developed jointly by Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey, it serves as a key overland trade route.

Meanwhile, Lithuania announced plans to use the Middle Corridor for deliveries to Central Asia and China. The route’s importance was further underlined at the Kazakhstan-Cyprus Business Forum in Astana on June 4. The event brought together senior officials and over 70 business leaders from both countries. The agreements signed during the Hong Kong delegation’s visit cover trade, media, and logistics. The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway’s launch also strengthens regional connectivity. These developments are set to expand economic links between Asia and Europe.
