Germany's sensor industry sees cautious 2025 rebound amid job cuts and regulations

Germany's sensor and measurement technology sector showed signs of a modest recovery in 2025. After a period of decline, the industry recorded a slight revenue increase, with key players like Sartorius and Jenoptik leading growth in photonics, life sciences, and IoT. However, challenges such as job cuts and stricter regulations remained prominent concerns for businesses. The AMA Association for Sensors and Measurement Technology conducted a survey among its members to assess economic trends in 2025. According to Philipp Gutmann, the association's managing director, the sector experienced moderate growth over the year. By the fourth quarter, revenues had risen by 1% compared to the previous quarter, while year-over-year figures showed an 11% increase from Q4 2024.

Order intake also improved, with a 2% uptick in the final quarter of 2025. Exports played a crucial role, making up 50% of the industry's revenue, with nearly a third (31%) coming from trade within Europe. Meanwhile, companies faced pressure from regulatory changes, including the EU Cyber Resilience Act—31% reported being well prepared, while another 33% were still in the planning phase. Despite the recovery, the sector continued to grapple with job reductions, with total employment falling to 124,100. At the same time, nearly half of the surveyed firms (48%) expressed plans to expand operations in India. The global market also saw shifts, such as STMicroelectronics strengthening its position through the acquisition of NXP's MEMS business, while demand for humidity sensors—driven by AI and IoT applications—reached $6.04 billion.

The 2025 results suggest a cautious rebound for Germany's sensor and measurement technology industry. While revenue and export figures improved, businesses still faced challenges from job cuts and evolving regulations. Expansion plans in markets like India and ongoing innovation in photonics and IoT indicate a focus on future growth despite persistent hurdles.
