Germany's pension funds face crisis as regulators demand urgent reforms
A deepening crisis has hit Germany's professional pension funds, with institutions facing tens of millions in losses from high-risk investments. The Association of Professional Pension Institutions (ABV) has now stepped in, warning that public disputes are eroding trust in the system. Their focus has turned to the Berlin Dental Association's pension fund (VZB), which has become a major concern for regulators and members alike.
The ABV has criticised the slow response to the VZB's financial troubles. In a bid to restore confidence, the board is pushing for faster action from the fund's administrative committee. Among its demands are a significantly speeded-up timeline for submitting the 2024 and 2025 financial statements.
To address wider instability, the ABV has rolled out a certification system for professional pension funds. This new framework requires compliance with joint guidelines on investment strategy, risk management, and governance. The goal is to ensure stricter oversight and greater accountability across the sector. The ABV has also made its support for the VZB conditional on meeting key conditions. These include regular written updates on progress, as well as timely, transparent information for members. Additionally, the board insists on bringing in external expertise for critical decisions within the fund's leadership. Failure to act, the ABV warns, could reignite debates over retirement provisions for freelance professionals. The organisation stresses that without decisive measures, the VZB's struggles may set a troubling precedent for similar institutions.
The ABV's intervention signals growing pressure on the VZB to stabilise its finances and rebuild trust. If its demands are met, the certification system and stricter reporting rules could help prevent further losses. For now, the fund's next steps will determine whether confidence in the professional pension system can be restored.
