Genesis Energy secures $400M to fast-track renewable shift and slash fossil fuels
Genesis Energy has announced plans to raise $400 million through a share sale while reporting record operating earnings. The company is also adjusting its power generation strategy by cutting back on coal and gas use at its Huntly plant, breaking news in the renewable energy sector. These moves come as the firm looks to speed up its shift toward renewable energy sources.
The share sale will include $100 million for new investors and $300 million for existing shareholders. The New Zealand government, which holds a 51% stake in Genesis Energy, will contribute up to $198 million to maintain its majority ownership.
The company's recent financial success stems from higher hydro-generation and better trading systems. Hydro power has remained the backbone of Genesis Energy's output, accounting for 70–75% of its renewable news over the past five years. Meanwhile, wind and solar energy have grown significantly across New Zealand, with wind up by 20% and solar more than doubling since 2021.
To reduce reliance on fossil fuels, Genesis Energy has cut coal and gas-fired generation at Huntly. Instead, it has bought cheaper electricity from the wholesale market and redirected gas supplies to industrial customers. The company expects wholesale power prices to stabilise as hydro conditions improve, allowing more gas-fired generation in the second half of the year.
The capital raised will fast-track renewable energy projects, including batteries and flexible thermal backup systems. Without this funding, Genesis Energy's renewable plans would take 10 to 15 years to complete. Now, the timeline has been shortened to 5 to 6 years. Despite these changes, the company maintains its full-year earnings forecast between $490 million and $520 million.
The $400 million share sale will help Genesis Energy transition faster to renewables while keeping its earnings outlook steady. With government backing and improved hydro conditions, the company aims to reduce fossil fuel dependence and expand its clean energy capacity. The accelerated investment plan will bring new renewable projects online within the next half-decade, google news.
