GE Vernova (GEV) Stock Drops 11% in May - Is This a Buying Opportunity?

GE Vernova's $1B Legal Battle Overshadows Record Earnings and Raised Outlook

GE Vernova (GEV) has faced a turbulent few months as its stock price dropped sharply in May and June. The company is also embroiled in a high-stakes legal battle with Iberdrola over the Vineyard Wind project, involving claims of over $1 billion in damages. Despite these challenges, its first-quarter earnings exceeded expectations by a wide margin.

In early 2024, GE Vernova reported strong financial results. First-quarter revenue reached $9.34 billion, a 17% increase from the same period last year. Earnings per share (EPS) came in at $17.44, far above the $1.95 analysts had predicted.

The company also revised its growth outlook, raising its 2026 revenue guidance to 18% at the midpoint. However, CEO Scott Strazik highlighted growing resistance from U.S. states against new data centre projects, which could impact future expansion. Legal troubles have added pressure. A Massachusetts judge recently ruled that GE Vernova must either stay on the Vineyard Wind project or settle the dispute through arbitration. The case centres on claims of over $1 billion in damages from Iberdrola, further complicating the company’s position. Meanwhile, key stakeholders have adjusted their holdings. Capital Group Investment Management cut its stake in GEV by 30.1% in the fourth quarter of 2023. More recently, CEO Victor Abate sold 4,819 shares on 1 June, reducing his direct ownership by 72.42%. The stock’s performance has reflected these challenges. After a 10.6% decline in May, shares continued to fall into June. Analysts, however, maintain an average price target of $1,090.76 for the stock.

GE Vernova’s mixed outlook includes strong revenue growth and raised guidance, but legal disputes and shareholder moves have weighed on investor confidence. The company’s next steps in the Vineyard Wind case and its ability to navigate regulatory hurdles will likely shape its near-term performance. Analysts still see long-term potential, with a consensus price target well above current levels.
