Galaxus Struggles to Crack Germany's Top Online Retailers Despite Bold Ambitions

Swiss online retailer Galaxus has expanded into Germany despite strong competition from local retailers like Otto and MediaMarkt Saturn. The company, owned by the Migros Group, entered the market in 2018 with ambitions to grow and become one of the top five online sellers in the country. However, its strategy to differentiate itself from these established competitors remains unclear.

Galaxus began as an IT and electronics specialist, operating under the Migros umbrella as part of the Digitec Galaxus Group. The company's move into Germany in 2018 was bold, given the dominance of established names like Amazon and MediaMarkt Saturn.

The retailer set up its German headquarters in Hamburg, aiming to break into the top five online sellers. However, it currently ranks around 30th in the market. Despite this, details on how it plans to compete with these giants have not been made public.

Since launching, Galaxus has not outlined a distinct approach to compete in the crowded German market. While it aimed for rapid growth, the lack of a clear strategy has left its position in the market uncertain.

Galaxus remains a small player in Germany's crowded online retail space, focusing on electronics and IT products under Migros ownership.
