Furukawa Electric pumps ₱17B into Philippine AI cooling tech expansion

Furukawa Electric Co. Ltd. will invest ₱17 billion to expand its thermal management operations in the Philippines. The project, announced after a meeting between company leaders and President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., targets the growing demand for advanced cooling systems in AI and digital infrastructure.

The expansion is part of a larger JPY 55 billion (₱20 billion) capital expenditure plan by the Japanese firm. The investment will boost production of high-performance heat sinks at Furukawa Electric Thermal Management Solutions and Products Laguna, Inc. (FTL) in Laguna Technopark. These components are essential for data centres, particularly as the generative AI market expands globally.

During a May 28 meeting, President Marcos Jr. and Furukawa Electric CEO Hideya Moridaira discussed opportunities for deeper collaboration. Topics included technology transfer, workforce training, and strengthening local supplier networks. Trade Secretary Ma. Cristina A. Roque noted that the investment signals growing Japanese confidence in the Philippines as a hub for advanced electronics and next-generation technologies.

The expansion is expected to generate around 4,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly. Officials from both countries also emphasised the potential for broader cooperation in electronics, digital infrastructure, and advanced manufacturing sectors. The ₱17 billion project aligns with rising global demand for cooling solutions in AI and data infrastructure. It also reinforces ties between Japan and the Philippines in high-tech manufacturing. Production increases at the Laguna facility are set to begin as part of Furukawa Electric’s wider investment strategy.
