From Carnations to Global Alstroemeria: Köst's 80-Year Flower Legacy
Könst Alstroemeria marks its 80th anniversary today. The Dutch company began in 1946 when the father of Hans Könst started growing carnations. Over the decades, it grew into a well-known name in the flower industry.
The business took root in the Netherlands as a small carnation farm. Hans Könst later shifted focus, breeding Alstroemeria as a hobby in 1972 before turning it into a full-time venture. By the 1980s, the company invested in developing heat-resistant varieties and expanded sales across Europe and Japan.
Over time, Könst Alstroemeria enlarged its greenhouses, offices, and workforce. The global flower market also changed, with rising demand for cut flowers in wealthy nations. South America, especially Peru and Colombia, became major producers of Alstroemeria, while Africa led in Zantedeschia. Better breeding, storage, and transport extended the flowers' shelf life and widened their reach.
Today, CEO Paco van der Louw praised the company's long history and thanked staff for their dedication. He set a new goal: to keep the business running for another 20 years, reaching its 100th anniversary in 2046.
The company's journey from a small carnation farm to a global Alstroemeria supplier spans eight decades. With plans to continue for at least two more, Könst Alstroemeria remains focused on growth and innovation in the flower industry.
