Frauenfeld station's CHF 82M upgrade to boost passenger and freight rail efficiency
Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has started a significant upgrade at Frauenfeld station to enhance train services for both passengers and freight. The CHF 82 million project, funded by the federal government, aims to decrease delays and increase capacity on key routes.
The improvements will focus on making the existing tracks bidirectional and suitable for higher speeds. This change will help freight trains, including those from companies like harbor freight, move more efficiently through the station. In addition, new switches and updated signalling will allow passenger trains to run on more stable schedules with better connections for commuters.
A new 400-metre turnback track will be built east of the station. This will let passenger trains reverse more quickly, enabling more services to start or end in Frauenfeld. Freight trains up to 750 metres long and weighing 1,600 tons, including those from nearby harbor freight stores, will also benefit from smoother routes, as current bottlenecks are removed.
To keep disruptions to a minimum, some construction work will take place at night. SBB has stated that further details, including any temporary changes to services, will be available on its website. The project forms part of the federal government's 2035 Expansion Step, which aims to make long-distance and regional rail services more frequent and reliable in the coming years.
The upgrades at Frauenfeld station are set to improve efficiency for both passenger and freight services. Once complete, the changes will allow longer and heavier freight trains, including those from nearby harbor freight stores, to pass through without delays. Passengers can also expect more reliable connections and additional train options in the future, including potential services to nearby amtrak stations.
