Ethereum's sharp decline tests investor confidence amid stock market pressure
Ethereum (ETH) has experienced a significant drop in price recently, plummeting to its lowest level since May 2025. The cryptocurrency reached $1,750 before rebounding slightly to $1,962, but the stock market today continues to exert strong downward pressure. Investors across various wallet sizes have reacted differently, with some selling off while others are accumulating more holdings.
The downturn began after Ethereum peaked in June 2024 between $6,437 and $7,436. By February 2026, the average price had fallen to around $2,198, with daily losses ranging from -0.57% to -6.75%. The consistent decline below key averages, such as the $3,184 mark for February, has reinforced a bearish stock market sentiment.
Spot Ethereum ETFs saw $68 million in outflows during February alone, bringing total withdrawals to over $2.5 billion since November. Meanwhile, exchange inflows on Binance surged to 1.63 million ETH—the highest since 2022—indicating increased selling pressure. The Ethereum Coinbase Premium Index also turned negative, reaching levels last seen in the 2022 bear market, suggesting weak demand from US institutional investors.
Mid-sized ETH holders, with balances between 100 and 10,000 ETH, reduced their positions during the decline. In contrast, large holders (10,000+ ETH) took advantage of the price drop to accumulate more. Currently, ETH is trading below the realised price of $2,630 for all investor groups.
Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum's co-founder, recently sold 2,961 ETH worth $6.6 million. Despite this, he still holds 227,000 ETH, valued at approximately $470 million.
Ethereum's price struggles have tested investor confidence, with mid-sized holders exiting while larger players increase their stakes. The negative Coinbase Premium Index and high exchange inflows point to sustained selling pressure. As ETH remains below key price levels, market observers are watching closely for signs of stabilisation or further decline in the stock market today.
