Ecobank strengthens Africa's cross-border payments with FX and trade finance push

Ecobank has expanded its financial services across Africa, focusing on cross-border payments and corporate liquidity. The bank's recent growth comes from stronger foreign exchange (FX) activity and improved market conditions.

Its platforms now streamline transactions for businesses, while a new partnership with Thunes further boosts payment solutions across the continent.

Ecobank operates in 35 sub-Saharan African countries, providing digital FX and trade finance services. The bank supports African companies with chain-finance solutions, structured finance, and treasury cover. Its FX liquidity and payment systems help firms access foreign currency and secure credit lines.

Trade between Africa and China has surged in recent years, particularly in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and Côte d'Ivoire. Out of Ecobank's 35 markets, 28 have seen a sharp rise in trade volumes with China since 2023. This growth has driven demand for FX services, as African economies rely heavily on cross-border transactions.

In 2024, Ecobank Transnational issued a $400 million eurobond, strengthening its financial position. The bank's Corporate and Investment Banking division has also benefited from increased FX volumes. With fragmented currencies and limited liquidity in many African markets, Ecobank's continent-wide FX capabilities have become essential for businesses.

Ecobank's focus on digital FX and trade finance has strengthened its role in African markets. The bank's recent eurobond issuance and partnership with Thunes highlight its expanding influence. As trade with China grows, Ecobank's services will remain critical for businesses navigating currency and payment challenges.
