Asparagus Harvest Begins - Farmers Expect Rising Prices - Early asparagus harvest begins but higher prices loom for 2026 season

The asparagus season has kicked off in Rhineland-Palatinate, though most fields remain quiet for now. Farmers warn that prices will climb this year due to rising costs, including a higher minimum wage for seasonal workers. Good weather has helped early harvesting, but full production won't start until April.

In southern Rhineland-Palatinate, the first spears have been cut, but activity stays limited. Further north, growers will begin later, following their usual schedule. Outside the region, such as in Bruchsal, harvesting traditionally starts in mid-March—this year, it began on March 5. Meanwhile, in Niedersachsen's Kreis Celle, fields opened unusually early on March 10, though most areas there normally wait until spring progresses.

Asparagus farming depends entirely on seasonal labour, making wages a major expense. Germany's minimum wage rose to €13.90 per hour in 2026, with another increase to €14.60 planned for January 2027. Alongside high energy costs, this has pushed up production expenses. Pricing also reflects yield, quality grading, and operational outlays—all now under pressure. So far, weather conditions have been kind, supporting early growth. But significant volumes won't reach supermarkets until April, when the main harvest gets underway.

Consumers should expect higher asparagus prices this season as farmers pass on extra costs. The combination of wage hikes, energy expenses, and favourable weather will shape both yields and market availability. Full-scale harvesting remains weeks away, with most regions still preparing for their peak season.
