EAEU strengthens trade ties with Serbia, Cuba, and Tunisia in bold expansion
The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) has approved new trade initiatives at its latest high-level meeting. Leaders gathered on 29 May to strengthen economic ties and expand cooperation with global partners. Key agreements included updates to existing deals and plans for future digital and transport projects. During the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting, members reviewed trade progress over the past five years. The bloc highlighted successful agreements with Serbia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, and Mongolia. One immediate change was the decision to simplify customs procedures under the 2019 free trade deal with Serbia.
A new five-year cooperation plan with Cuba was also signed, covering trade, technology, and investment. Meanwhile, the EAEU launched free trade talks with Tunisia, calling it a gateway to African markets. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stressed the importance of digitalising transport routes across Eurasia. Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev proposed creating a shared digital space to boost trade efficiency with EAEU nations. The group also adopted a joint statement on the responsible development of artificial intelligence. Armenia’s Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan welcomed treaty amendments that extend financial aid for agro-industrial projects. These updates aim to support farmers and food producers within the union.
The EAEU’s latest decisions focus on modernising trade and expanding partnerships. Updated customs rules, new trade talks, and digital infrastructure plans are set to shape the bloc’s economic strategy. The agreements with Serbia, Cuba, and Tunisia mark a push into both European and African markets.
