E.ON CEO urges Germany to overhaul energy policies ahead of major reforms

E.ON CEO Leonhard Birnbaum has called on the German government to reform its energy policies. His comments come as Economy Minister Katharina Reiche prepares to unveil a major legislative package targeting the sector. Birnbaum argues that the existing system is unsustainable for the next phase of Germany’s energy transition. Reiche’s proposed reforms include changes to renewable energy subsidies and updated rules for grid connections. The package aims to reshape how Germany manages its energy market in the coming years.

Parts of the renewables industry have already criticised the plans, while the SPD’s parliamentary group has voiced opposition. Despite this, Birnbaum has thrown his support behind Reiche, calling her proposals a 'bold legislative package' that Germany cannot afford to ignore.

In a recent statement, Birnbaum warned that clinging to the old system—regardless of cost—would hinder progress. He stressed the need for a 'genuine system transformation' that addresses infrastructure, heating, mobility, digitalisation, and flexibility. Without these changes, he claims, the second half of the energy transition will fail. The reforms, if passed, would mark a significant shift in Germany’s energy policy. Birnbaum’s backing adds weight to Reiche’s proposals, though resistance from industry groups and political opponents remains.
