Dangote Group fights AI deepfakes while reporting Q1 2026 profit surge
The Dangote Group has issued strong warnings about the misuse of AI to spread false information involving its leadership. Recent incidents include fake videos targeting prominent figures like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Jim Ovia. Meanwhile, the company’s financial results for Q1 2026 show a significant turnaround, with Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc reporting a profit before tax of N20.6 billion.
In February, a fabricated AI-generated video falsely depicted Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala making misleading statements. The Dangote Group condemned the misuse of technology to create deepfake content involving its executives. Similarly, Zenith Bank Plc distanced itself from a doctored clip that wrongly showed its founder, Jim Ovia, endorsing a fraudulent investment scheme.
The Group has also denied claims that Aliko Dangote sought personal loans from friends to fund his refinery project. Officials clarified that such financing methods are not part of the company’s strategy. Additionally, the organisation dismissed rumours of a rift with Tony Elumelu, reaffirming their cordial relationship. Financially, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc reported a profit before tax of N20.6 billion in Q1 2026, recovering from a loss in the same period last year. The improvement was driven by a sharp decline in raw material costs, which significantly reduced the company’s cost of sales. The Group continues to urge the public to remain vigilant against AI-generated misinformation. It has reiterated that any unauthorised use of its brand or leadership’s likeness in advertisements is false and misleading.
The Dangote Group’s financial recovery in Q1 2026 marks a positive shift after previous losses. At the same time, the company remains focused on combating AI-driven disinformation targeting its executives. Officials have reaffirmed their stance against false claims, including those about personal borrowing and internal disputes.
