Cardano governance fight grows as Hoskinson audits 11,000 DAOs

Cardano's governance crisis deepens as 81% reject $32.9M research funding

Cardano’s on-chain governance system is facing a critical test as a funding proposal for its research lab meets strong opposition. The vote, running until June 8, will decide whether Input Output Global (IOG) receives 32.9 million ADA for another year of work. So far, 81% of active stakeholders have rejected the plan, raising questions about the project’s future direction.

Charles Hoskinson, Cardano’s founder, has warned that failing to fund research could drive away key scientists and weaken the network’s science-based identity. Meanwhile, he is exploring broader changes to Cardano’s governance, drawing on a decade of DAO research to shape upcoming reforms. The funding dispute centres on a 32.9 million ADA proposal to extend IOG’s research lab for another year. As of May 22, 81% of active stake had voted against it, signalling deep divisions within the community. Hoskinson has stressed that Cardano’s reputation relies on its research-driven approach, arguing that losing funding could push researchers toward other projects.

Beyond this vote, Hoskinson is studying over 11,000 decentralised autonomous organisations (DAOs) to improve Cardano’s governance. His review covers a decade of data, examining how DAOs handle decision-making, strategy, and executive functions. These findings may influence Cardano’s next constitution, due in 2027, and could lead to new governance features.

Hoskinson has also hinted at becoming a delegate representative and hosting a mini-convention before the 2027 process. His work shifts the debate from a single funding decision to broader questions about how Cardano should govern itself.

Current market data shows Cardano’s ADA with a market cap near $9.08 billion. DefiLlama figures list $517 in 24-hour chain revenue, $2,583 in fees, and $1.83 million in decentralised exchange (DEX) volume at the time of reporting. These numbers provide context as the community weighs the research lab’s future role in the ecosystem. The vote on June 8 will determine whether Cardano’s research lab continues with 32.9 million ADA in funding. If rejected, the network may need to adjust its approach to retaining researchers and maintaining its science-focused identity. Hoskinson’s ongoing DAO research could also reshape governance discussions, offering new models for decision-making before the 2027 constitution update.
