Canada injects C$3.6B to dominate the global critical minerals race

Canada is boosting its critical minerals sector with a C$3.6 billion investment package. The move aims to secure the country's position as a global leader in mining and processing essential resources. Several provinces, including Ontario and Saskatchewan, already rank among the world's top regions for mining investment.

The federal government announced a series of measures to strengthen supply chains and reduce reliance on dominant producers. A key part of the plan is the C$1.5 billion First and Last Mile Fund, designed to improve infrastructure for transporting minerals. Additionally, C$165.2 million will support 22 projects focused on accelerating exploration, development, and processing capacity.

The government has also expanded the Critical Mineral Exploration Tax Credit to cover 12 more essential resources. This change encourages further investment in mining activities. Another major initiative is the Critical Minerals Sovereign Fund, which will attract private capital and provide anchor funding for strategic projects.

Canada's strategy includes building full end-to-end value chains within the country. The goal is to process raw materials into advanced products domestically rather than exporting them unrefined. Officials highlight that these investments will create well-paying jobs, strengthen rural economies, and enhance national security.

The new funding and policies position Canada to play a larger role in the global critical minerals market. By improving infrastructure, expanding tax incentives, and fostering domestic processing, the government expects to secure long-term economic and strategic benefits. The initiatives also aim to support mining-dependent regions while ensuring a stable supply of essential resources.
