Bond Market 'Death Cross' Signals Trouble for Stocks and Investors
A warning signal has flashed in the bond market, raising concerns for investors. John Rowland, a Chartered Market Technician, recently analysed a 'death cross' in the iShares High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG). Meanwhile, rising yields and falling bond prices are putting pressure on stocks. The 'death cross' occurs when a security's 50-day moving average drops below its 200-day moving average. This pattern, spotted in HYG, confirms an ongoing bearish trend rather than predicting a new one. While the timing of the last such signal remains unclear, its appearance now suggests sustained weakness in high-yield bonds.
Yields on the U.S. 10-year Treasury have surged sharply, with some analysts forecasting a move toward 5% or higher. As yields climb, borrowing costs rise, and future corporate earnings lose value under stricter discounting. Growth stocks, in particular, face stronger headwinds as their valuations come under pressure.
The bond market is currently dictating terms, with falling prices and rising yields reflecting demand for higher returns—a phenomenon often called 'bond vigilantism'. Until yields stabilise or retreat, equities are unlikely to find solid footing. Tighter financial conditions, driven by these higher yields, further weigh on market sentiment. For now, the bond market holds the upper hand, creating challenges for equities. Stabilisation in yields could eventually help stocks recover, but the current environment remains difficult. Investors are watching closely as higher borrowing costs and reduced valuation support reshape risk appetites.
