Bitcoin's price swings now tied to Federal Reserve liquidity trends, study reveals
Bitcoin’s price movements have long been tied to shifts in US financial conditions. New research from Alphractal now highlights a clear link between Federal Reserve liquidity trends and the cryptocurrency’s major rallies and declines. Analysts are paying closer attention to these patterns as Bitcoin hovers near key technical levels.
The findings challenge some long-held assumptions about market cycles, including the idea of a final capitulation event in prolonged bear phases.
Between 2020 and 2021, Bitcoin surged from around $10,000 to a peak of $69,000. During the same period, combined balances in the Fed’s Reverse Repo Program (RRP) and the Treasury General Account (TGA) jumped from roughly $2 trillion to $7 trillion. This liquidity expansion coincided with Bitcoin’s bull run.
The opposite occurred in 2022. Aggressive liquidity tightening by the Fed began weeks before Bitcoin’s steep drop from $69,000 to nearly $15,500. The pattern repeated in later cycles, with tightening conditions often preceding major corrections. More recently, improving liquidity conditions emerged before Bitcoin’s rebound toward $73,000 in 2023 and early 2024. Fed RRP declines and increased Treasury spending have continued to influence crypto market liquidity. Meanwhile, VirtualBacon questioned the widely held belief that Bitcoin must experience one final capitulation event before a sustained recovery. Analysts also note Bitcoin’s 200-week simple moving average, currently near $61,000. This level remains a critical technical marker for traders assessing market momentum.
The connection between Fed liquidity flows and Bitcoin’s price cycles is becoming harder to ignore. As liquidity conditions shift, their impact on crypto markets is increasingly documented. With Bitcoin trading near key thresholds, these trends may play a decisive role in its next major move.
