Bitcoin crashes 45% as mining costs and low liquidity fuel market uncertainty

Bitcoin has dropped by 45% in recent weeks, a decline analysts say aligns with past bear market cycles. The cryptocurrency now sits near a key support level, while mining costs and network activity show signs of strain. Meanwhile, major firms like GameStop continue to hold large Bitcoin reserves despite market turbulence. Bitcoin's price is testing a critical support zone between $65,500 and $66,000. If it falls below this range, analysts warn of a possible drop toward $60,000–$62,000. The 50-day exponential moving average, currently around $72,000, remains well above the latest trading levels.

Trading volumes have stayed low, increasing the risk of sharp price swings in the short term. Goldman Sachs highlights this as a concern, though the bank maintains buy ratings on crypto-linked stocks such as Coinbase and Robinhood. Spot Bitcoin ETFs also saw net outflows of nearly $296 million in the week ending March 28, breaking a four-week streak of inflows. On March 27, Bitcoin futures contracts worth around $13.45 billion expired, causing open interest to plummet by 42%. Mining operations face pressure too, with average production costs nearing $80,000 per Bitcoin. The network's hashrate, once at a peak of 1,160 EH/s, has since fallen to about 1,020 EH/s, reflecting changes in miner activity. Foundry, a major mining pool under Digital Currency Group, has played a significant role in these shifts, including expansions into Zcash mining. Despite the downturn, GameStop still holds 4,710 Bitcoin, valued at roughly $368 million. Nearly all of it—4,709 BTC—is pledged as collateral for an options strategy through Coinbase Credit.

Bitcoin's recent decline mirrors historical patterns, but low liquidity and high mining costs add to near-term uncertainty. The network's hashrate adjustments and large futures expirations suggest ongoing shifts in market dynamics. Investors and miners alike are watching closely as the price hovers near critical support levels.
