Bastrop's booming growth tests its tight-knit community spirit
Bastrop, Texas, is experiencing rapid growth after years of slow development. Once a quiet rural town of around 8,500 people, it has added nearly 6,000 residents since 2019. The surge follows the arrival of major companies like SpaceX, Starlink, and LS Electric, drawn by its proximity to Austin.
Now, city leaders are focusing on managing this expansion while preserving Bastrop's tight-knit community feel.
Before 2019, Bastrop's population hovered between 8,000 and 8,500. Its rural location, limited industry, and reliance on tourism and forestry kept growth modest. But as Austin expanded, Bastrop became an attractive option for businesses and new residents.
The influx of companies linked to Elon Musk has brought both economic promise and local concerns. City officials are working directly with these firms to ensure responsible development. Mayor Ishmael Harris, a former Planning & Zoning chair, stresses the need for collaboration between the city, county, and school districts to handle the regional impact.
Top priorities for 2026 include building a regional hospital and a community recreation centre. Harris aims to create infrastructure that supports a self-sustaining Bastrop, where residents can live, work, and thrive without relying on nearby cities.
Despite the changes, Bastrop's historic downtown remains a cultural hub. Annual events like the Homecoming Parade and Lighted Christmas Parade continue to draw crowds. This year, the town will also host its third Mardi Gras festival, featuring live music, a gumbo cook-off, and community celebrations.
Harris is determined to balance growth with long-term planning. His goal is to set Bastrop up for a stable, prosperous future.
Bastrop's transformation from a sleepy rural town to a growing community is well underway. With new infrastructure projects, cultural events, and corporate partnerships, the city is working to ensure its expansion benefits residents.
The focus now is on building a sustainable future—one where Bastrop remains a place people are proud to call home.
