Azerbaijani Alpinist’s Everest Documentary Wins Top Journalism Honor

A documentary following Azerbaijani alpinist Vafa Gahraman’s historic ascent of Everest and Lhotse has won a top journalism award. The film, titled From Azerbaijan to the Top of the World, was recognised by the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs. Its creator, Zeynab Farajzade, highlighted the resilience and ambition of Azerbaijani women through Gahraman’s extraordinary journey.

The winning documentary, From Azerbaijan to the Top of the World: Vafa Gahraman Conquers Everest and Lhotse, was released in 2024. Filmed partly at Mount Kepez, it captures Gahraman’s gruelling climb, making her the first Azerbaijani woman to summit both peaks in a single season.

At the awards ceremony, Gahraman accepted the prize on behalf of Farajzade. She described the moment as deeply emotional, especially after watching the film for the first time. The recognition came as part of a journalists’ competition marking the 'Year of the Constitution and Sovereignty' and the 150th anniversary of Azerbaijani National Press. Farajzade’s work was praised for its portrayal of determination and perseverance. The documentary not only chronicles a physical feat but also celebrates the spirit of Azerbaijani women pushing boundaries in extreme sports.

The award underscores the impact of Gahraman’s achievement and Farajzade’s storytelling. The documentary now stands as a testament to both athletic and journalistic excellence in Azerbaijan. It will likely inspire further recognition of women’s contributions in adventure and media.
