Austria's elite unite in new Oktogon Business Club amid economic uncertainty

Austria's economy showed fragile signs of recovery in early 2025, but fresh challenges have dimmed the outlook. After two years of recession, growth reached just 0.6% last year, yet stagnation returned by the end of 2025. Against this backdrop, a new high-level forum—the Oktogon Business Club—launched in Vienna, bringing together top executives and policymakers to tackle the country's economic future. The club was officially unveiled at Haus am Schottentor, with Chancellor Christian Stocker headlining the event. Over 120 guests gathered in the historic Oktogon for an evening of discussions, fine wines from F.X. Pichler, and gourmet finger food. Stocker stressed the urgency of preparing for disruptions caused by the late-February Iran conflict, warning of its impact on energy markets, investments, and inflation.

During a fireside chat moderated by Christoph Mager and Prof. Wolfgang Rosam, the chancellor outlined Austria's economic policy priorities. He described the club as a vital platform for boosting competitiveness and future-proofing the country. Mager later noted that the forum would give leaders a space to collaborate on solutions, with keynote speeches planned two to three times a year. The economic context adds weight to these discussions. While Austria's 2025 growth matched the Eurozone's modest rebound, weak manufacturing and a 2.9% drop in construction dragged down momentum. Raiffeisen Research has since slashed its 2026 forecast from 1% to 0.3%, citing the Iran conflict's threat to trade, shipping, and energy costs. Inflation could now climb between 3.5% and 6%, further straining recovery efforts.

The Oktogon Business Club's launch comes at a critical time for Austria's economy. With growth forecasts cut and external risks mounting, the forum aims to foster dialogue between business and government. Its success may hinge on how well these leaders navigate the pressures ahead.
