ASEAN Accelerates Green Transition with 2030 Carbon Neutrality Roadmap
ASEAN leaders have outlined bold steps to speed up sustainable growth and carbon neutrality by 2030. A statement released on Saturday highlighted key targets, including a 40% cut in energy intensity and a 30% share of renewable energy. The plans also focus on boosting investment in green technologies across the region. The region is finalising the ASEAN Blue Economy Implementation Plan 2026-2030 to push forward marine-based sustainable development. Alongside this, the ASEAN Blue Carbon and Finance Profiling project will map out blue capital assets and pinpoint areas for sustainable investment. Member-states have expressed confidence in the project’s potential to unlock new funding opportunities.
Progress has also been made on the ASEAN Regional Investment Action Plan 2025-2030, which aims to draw foreign investment into green transition sectors. Key areas for funding include carbon capture and storage, biofuels, solar photovoltaic equipment, medical devices, veterinary healthcare, and green building materials. Leaders are additionally working on the ASEAN Strategy for Carbon Neutrality Work Plan to turn climate goals into action.
Energy security remains a priority, with ASEAN accelerating the Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation 2026-2030. By 2030, the region targets a 45% share of renewable energy in installed power capacity. These measures aim to strengthen resilience while cutting emissions. The new plans set clear benchmarks for ASEAN’s green transition, from renewable energy growth to investment in low-carbon industries. If implemented as outlined, the region expects to move closer to carbon neutrality by the end of the decade. The next steps will involve turning policy commitments into concrete projects and partnerships.
