Rising diesel costs and unreliable power grids are pushing African mobile operators to switch to solar energy. Many companies now see clean power as a cheaper and more dependable alternative for running telecom towers. The shift comes as fuel prices climb sharply across the continent. Diesel has long powered most of Africa’s 500,000 telecom towers. But surging prices—linked partly to the Iran conflict—have made it far more expensive. In Nigeria alone, diesel costs jumped by up to 200% in a year, forcing operators to spend around $400 million annually just to keep towers running.

Vodacom Africa’s energy bills rose 5% to $300 million in 2025, driven by higher electricity tariffs and fuel expenses. For off-grid towers, energy can account for up to 60% of operating costs, making solar an attractive financial option. Companies are now speeding up clean energy projects to cut expenses and improve reliability.

Firms like iSAT Africa are rolling out solar-powered towers, while larger operators are expanding hybrid systems. These combine solar panels, battery storage, and limited diesel backup. Some aim for fully solar-powered sites, especially in rural areas where grid connections are too costly. The move also reduces dependence on fuel supplies, which can be scarce and unpredictable.

Africa’s weaker grid infrastructure makes the transition both harder and more impactful. Solar-powered towers face fewer disruptions from fuel shortages or generator failures, keeping networks running smoothly in underserved regions. The switch to solar is gaining momentum as operators seek stable, cost-effective power solutions. Hybrid and fully solar systems are becoming standard, particularly in remote locations. With diesel prices volatile and grid access limited, clean energy offers a practical way forward for Africa’s telecom sector.
