ACWA Power launches Uzbekistan's largest solar and battery storage plant
ACWA Power has begun commercial operations at a major solar and battery storage plant in Uzbekistan. The company is also advancing several large-scale wind and energy storage projects across the country. These developments mark a significant expansion in renewable energy capacity for the region.
The now operational Riverside Solar project in the Tashkent region includes 200 MW of solar power and a 668 MW battery energy storage system (BESS). ACWA Power fully owns and developed the plant, handling its engineering, procurement, and construction. The project, costing $546 million, secured financing in 2024 and operates under a 25-year power purchase agreement with Uzbekistan's national grid operator.
A separate 334 MW/500 MWh battery storage project has also started commercial operations. Meanwhile, the Beruniy project in Karakalpakstan, featuring 200 MW of wind and 200 MWh of storage, is in advanced development.
ACWA Power is pushing forward with two additional large projects in Karakalpakstan. The 1 GW Zarafshan Wind Farm will include 500 MW/2 GWh of storage, while the 1.5 GW Nukus Wind Farm will have 750 MW/3 GWh of storage. Both are set to be operational by 2027. The company has also agreed to develop the 1,500 MW Kungrad 123 Wind IPP, paired with a 300 MW BESS, alongside the Sazagan Solar projects.
In 2024, ACWA Power secured funding for a 1 GW solar plant, a 2 GWh battery storage system, and 500 km of transmission lines to support Uzbekistan's growing renewable energy network.
These projects will significantly boost Uzbekistan's wind and solar energy capacity. The developments include multiple gigawatts of new generation and storage, with key installations expected to come online by 2027. ACWA Power's investments align with the country's long-term energy transition plans.
