2026 Winter Olympics medals shatter value records as gold and silver prices soar
The medals for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy will be the most expensive in history. Soaring prices of gold and silver have pushed their value to record levels. Gold medals are now worth over $2,300—more than double their value at the Paris Games just two years ago.
Olympic gold medals have not been made from pure gold since 1912. Today, they contain just 6 grams of gold, with the rest being silver. Even so, their value has surged due to rising metal prices. A 1912 gold medal, worth less than $20 at the time, would now be around $530 when adjusted for inflation.
Silver medals have also seen a sharp increase, now valued at nearly $1,400—three times their worth in 2024. Bronze medals, made of copper, remain far cheaper at about $5.60 each.
The spike in precious metal prices has been dramatic. Gold rose over 35% in 2024, while silver jumped 152% in 2025. By early 2026, gold hit record highs above $4,700 per ounce, driven by geopolitical tensions and demand for safe-haven assets.
Looking ahead, the medals for the 2028 Summer Olympics could become even more expensive if gold and silver prices keep climbing. While their monetary value is high, Olympic medals often sell for far more as collectors' items.
The rising cost of gold and silver has made the 2026 Winter Olympic medals the priciest ever. With metal prices still climbing, future medals may break new records. Their value as collectibles could push prices even higher beyond their raw material worth.
